IX International Arts and Human Rights Encounters in Western Sahara

Wilaya of Boujdour (Sahrawi Refugee Camps; Tindouf, Algeria)

 October 31 - November 10, 2015

Only the act of resistance resists death,

whether the art is in the form of work of art,

or in the form of human struggle.

Gilles Deleuze

1975-2015, forty years.

In the spring of 1975 in Western Sahara a referendum announced by the Spanish government was to be hold. The same year the Court of Justice in The Hague issued a ruling which claimed that Western Sahara had no ties of sovereignity with Morocco and Mauritania, therefore self-determination was to be concluded. But History is written in a different way. On November 6th,  300.000 people advanced into the Western Sahara territory during the Green March, organized by the Moroccan King Hassan II as an occupation strategy. Meanwhile the Spanish government evacuated the "Spanish" population, and on November 14 signed a tripartite agreement which delivered the Western Sahara territory to Morocco and Mauritania, and originated the illegal occupation of their major cities. "No prisoners are taken, Moroccan tanks will pass over the Sahrawi injured" read the telegrams the last Spanish soldiers received before the withdrawal. The Sahrawi people began to run away from the slaughter, fleeing into the desert where they were bombed with napalm and white phosphorus.

May 2015. Western Sahara is the only African colony left to be decolonized. Today the Sahrawi territory is still invaded by Morocco, families are separated by a minefield wall of 2,700 km, suffering the repression in the occupied territories, such as imprisonment, disappearance, torture, plundering of its natural resources, and the hard exile in the Algerian Hamada where thousands of refugees are surviving, depending on external humanitarian assistance. Today the Saharawi conflict remains ignored and silenced...

40 years of occupation, 40 years of resistance.

In its ninth edition, ARTifariti proposes to reflect on the resistance of the Saharawi people, and the resistances of citizenship; to deepen into the ways of doing resistance from the Arts, through the work of Sahrawi and international creators, opening up spaces of discussion. For ARTifariti considers that art does not work in the direction of spreading and informing, but of take action as a force; it is resistance, rebellion, a way to question and rethink the present, to shape and build a future that does not exist, yet we yearn for.
